[announce] 8th annual "What are we like?" Questionnaire

by ru.igarashi@[EMAIL PROTECTED] Oct 21, 2004 at 06:01 AM

[OK, before I get into the the announcement, I have to relate
a quick little story. I've been awfully busy since last spring,
so I missed something I should have done in August. A couple weeks
ago, during some corresponses with Rob Kelk, he dropped a bombshell.
It went something like this (I paraphrase):
Rob: Hey, ru, are you going to run your survey this year?
   Ru: Panikku! Panniku!
That's sort of how the messages looked.
My actual reaction upon seeing Rob's words was more along the lines
of:
   Nani! ****! Nuts! (rapidfire)
   Panikku! Panniku! (tearing at hair)
Kusoooo! Two Months overdue! (face in hands)
*type type type (my response to Rob)*
That was followed by a frantic couple of weeks of edits and tests.
I hope I haven't screwed it up to much. Anyways, sorry for being
so late with this, folks. - ru]

Ru's 8th annual "What are we like?" Questionnaire

Over the few years that I've been a fan, there has been many
an occasion where a question popped up about some aspect of our
interest in anime in the rec.arts.anime.* newsgroups. At many of
those times it would have been nice if we had numbers to work
from. After a while, one gets really curious about just how
many of us do different things. So between the late summers of
1997 and 2001, I had been posting a semi-annual questionnaire
in the rec.arts.anime newsgroup hierarchy, mostly for the sake
of satisfying curiousity, and for some statistics we can throw
around in some of our discussions. The statistics have indeed
proven to be useful on occasion. Sometimes, the changes over
the past few surveys are also interesting (sometimes more
relevant than results from just one survey).

In 2001, I had to cut back to an annual survey because of time
constraints, but also because the trends I was most interested
in have pretty much slowed down. I also cut the duration from
4 weeks to 3 weeks.

2002 was when I made the questionnaire available as a web form,
in addition to my standard text posting to the rec.arts.anime.*
newsgroups. As you can imagine, the widgets on a web form
are a lot easier to fill out, and from my end, there are fewer
user mistakes to deal with and I get more compact returns.
I also finally found a place to put previous results, at

http://www.geocities.com/ruigara****/Surveys/fans/results.html

In 2003, Anime News Network was kind enough to post an announcement
for this survey, with an excellent response, as you can tell from
my results page.

This is the 8th annual running of the survey. The questionnaire
was originally concerned more or less with fans who used news
groups, as a lot of input over the years came from newsgroup
users. So, lacking sufficient anime web experience, it is a
fair bit short on the web perspective, and certainly needs work
to get more web-centric questions. Feel free to send me
suggestions (either by e-mail or in the comment box at the
end of the questionnaire).

Notes on filling out the questionnaire
--------------------------------------

Some of the questions may infringe on what you would consider
personal information. Feel free to leave any unanswered (even
a totally blank questionnaire has meaning).

If you have participated in this survey in past years, by all
means please do so again this time; I'm tracking changes in
results (or lack of changes) from past surveys and it helps to
have returning participants, and I keep adding new questions.

Also, if you are responding from the news groups, the questionnaire
will be submitted by your e-mail; if you don't want me to see your
e-mail address, don't do this survey. If you are using the web form,
at the end of the questionnaire I ask for some sort of name. It
doesn't have to be your real one, but if you add a question in
the comment area I've made available, it would be a good idea to
put your e-mail address in the input box or in your comment.
Either way, I have no intention of releasing personal info to
anyone (unless the law enforcement comes knocking on my door).
You can see from my past results that the only thing that gets
published is a Highlight and the tallies.

Oh ya, this thing is REALLY LONG (over 180 questions, over 1800 lines,
over 50 kbytes for the usenet version, over 110 kbytes for the web
version). Be prepared to spend half an hour to an hour on it. It's
really a list of questions I wished I had numbers for, and I've had
a long time to build it up. I thought I'd just warn you ahead of
time.

If you have any questions about the questionnaire, feel free to
e-mail me or post to rec.arts.anime.misc. Here we go...
