I'm sure no one will care to hear from me, but I've been reading up on
some of the news of the day and saw that the new Evangelion movie sold
monster DVD numbers over in Japan (of course, one has to wonder, then,
if that might be the only saleable titles over there right now, but
that's another flamewar...).
In the inevitable "What are people waiting for to get it released over
here?", the discussion pretty quickly came up with a good theory:
It's too big not to get MASSIVE licensing fees (probably talking a
couple million dollars at minimum!), so goodbye to all the minnows,
and probably to ADV)... So, chances are, with rumors that an Eva 1.0
announcement might be coming this summer, I sense that announcement is
not coming at AX.
It's coming at Comic-Con, since the big movie companies go there --
and, on top of it, Eva 1.0 is going to be too big for the current R1
industry (which is on the verge of collapse) to handle.
But here's the final kicker: One has to wonder how many thieves have
_already seen the movie_. Fanime is openly stealing the movie (unless
Gainax _IS_ actually going to grant them license to air it, and they
are supposed to be there... There's been quite some dispute as to
their involvement this year, and one has to wonder whether Eva 1.0 was
part of that dispute...) to air sometime Memorial Day weekend. (Hell,
it's not like they don't steal at least half of the material they use
in their five screening rooms. Two years ago, it was about 8-10.
Last year, 6.)
I am beginning to wonder if the anime culture and the size of the
movie are going to make it feasibly impossible for Eva 1.0 (or,
really, any of the Eva movies in the pipeline) to be feasibly released
in R1. You want to talk about the Haruhi Effect? Think of how much
the people are going to have to make the licensing fees worth, and can
even the major studios recover that?
Could Eva 1.0 be too big to release in R1??
