I thought so as well. It hardly sounds in the character's nature.
But after a little pondering, I think maybe the author is being
ironic.
For his crimes, some would find no greater ending to the series
than watching kira die a cowards death, humiliated, begging for
his life. In a sense, their moral superiority is the death
note in which Kira's name was written. And they, like he, are
reveling in their own divine judgment. The author has in effect,
and maybe unintentionally so, sent them out for a stroll in Light's
footware.
Of course, I've not read the manga, and I've only seen of
the series what's aired on Cartoon Network. So that's just
a wild thought from reading the spoilers in this thread.
So this is most likely just the sleep deprived ramblings of
uninformed fool at 4am. :)
