I hadn't been able to post these lately because of work.

In the weeks that passed, "Pirates" sank fast. I saw that movie in
its
second weekend. Now I liked "Jonah", but man I could see why this new
movie
fizzled. What a mopey movie: The pirates don't do anything because of
character flaws the script so heavily emphasizes that the film has a
gloomy and
humorless tone. The overemphasized flaws also make the three leads
unendurable. I was astonished at how the upbeat and witty tone of "Jonah"
seemed totally sapped out. :-(
Nothing in the story has any religious overtone until the very end,
when
the king the pirates help makes what I found a distubing analogy. Also,
the
film may have one positive effect of discouraging your obese kids from
ever
eating cheesepuffs again. :-)
In the opposite direction, "Persepolis" has been steadily rising in
visibility. It's now up to the 100 or so theaters a Miyazaki movie might
get. I wrote up my comments on the movie in another post after I saw the
movie in Atlanta. I've since confirmed upcoming openings in Charlotte,
Asheville, and even Columbia, SC. A very charming movie whose black and
white
style blends into the format of a darkened theater. But not as compelling
as
"Ratatouille". Still, I'm glad to see this movie catch on more than I
expected.
The distribution company the Bigger Picture has been showing animes
(as
well as kiddie cartoons ) for special one weekend runs. This is the first
time
I've seen boxofficemojo.com list the boxoffice of such a run. The film
this
time is a "One Piece" movie, a remake of the Alabaster arc.
http://www.onepieceofficial.com/movie/
It did have a run last weekend in a few theaters, but it's intended to be
a
DVD release. Judging from that per-theater-average, that's probably how
just
about everyone will see this movie in the U.S. Yikes.
Next week, they'll have a one-week run for "Vexille"
http://funimation.com/vexille.
At the end of January, "Beowulf" apparently left theaters. Everyone
thought this movie was going to destroy animation. It could only destroy
it
to the amount of a mediocre domestic run of $82,195,215, though it did
better
overseas, with a $113,191,048 take. Still, that domestic take could
discourage
people from motion capture epics, we can only hope.
