This month's cover DVD has episodes from three series on it.
First up is "The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye". Set in a world after
a major
war we have a sword-wielding girl and her cyborg tank travelling through
the
trackless deserts earning her keep as a mercenary for hire clearing out
the giant
insects that threaten the few cities that remain scattered around the
desert.
With its voice-over narration the series tries to present itself as an
'epic story'
but it comes across as a 90's Saturday morning TV mech show. Not that
there's
anything wrong with early 90's mech shows, some where quite good, ten
years ago.
It was, however, better than the second series on the disk: "Girl's High".
Actually, almost anything would be better than Girl's High. In theory
it's a story
about a group of girls who are starting their first year at an all-girl
high school.
In practise this is just a plot device to put in as much fanservice as
possible.
So, moving quickly on to the third episode on the disk, "Suzuka". I'd
heard a lot
about this series and had some hopes that it might be interesting. And
for the
first few minutes it did look interesting. We're introduced to this guy
who's
going to live with he aunt while he attends high school, then we learn
that his
aunt owns a bath house with an apartment block and that he's going to be
the only
guy living in the all-girl apartment block. You can see what's coming
can't you,
all the old cliche harem-anime situations. Going into the wrong room,
ending up in
an embarrassing position after an accident in the bath house. This has
been done so
often now that it's boring, and quite probably ruined an otherwise
perfectly good
story.
